Fabulous and easy succulent, perennial and semi-deciduous, with rather slow growth and bushy, thick and tidy posture, native to southern Africa: at the maximum of its development it can exceed 1 m in height and widen almost to the same extent. It has thorny, semi-woody stems (lignified only in very old specimens and only close to the ground) with a greyish bark which, rising and branching repeatedly, gives the plant a rather regular and compact shape. The leaves, alternate and slightly fleshy, smooth, glabrous, lanceolate in shape with smooth margins and acute apex, bright green, accompanying the elongation of the branches and then falling, are mainly concentrated on the terminal parts of the branches. Between late spring and late autumn, flowers known as "cyathus" bloom copiously, supported by thick stems: tiny and long lasting on the plant, they are wrapped in large and showy bracts which, depending on the variety, can be of various colors (red, white, pink, yellow).
