Shrub or small evergreen tree, with a distintive conical or pyramidal shape and which can reach a maximum height of 10-12 metres. It is native to South Europe and Asia Minor. Strongly branched from the base, this shrub shows woody stems covered with leathery lance-shaped and alternate leaves, caracterized by a glossy dark green upper page and a matt yellow/green bottom one. In addition leaves have wavy margins and are so aromatic to promote its use in the kitchen or in an herbalist's shop. in spring, this dioecious species fill of fragrant white/yellow flowers which gaher in short inflorescences followed by oval blackish fruits, olive-like, in autumn.
