Rustic shrub or sometimes small tree, perennial and evergreen, with rapid growth and compact habit, native to Australia, but naturalized in various areas of the Mediterranean: in a few years of cultivation it can reach even 4 m in height and even more than 2 m in width. Well lignified and branched from the base, it has erect stems with a characteristic pale, silvery bark, which slightly spread at the top giving the plant an expanded appearance; on these are alternately applied lanceolate leaves with acute apex, slightly fleshy and of a beautiful bright green. In late spring, in the terminal parts of the branches, abundant small inflorescences appear composed of a few tiny bell-shaped flowers with 5 lobes, white and sometimes mottled with purple: they are followed in autumn, and persist on the plant for the whole following winter, small ovoid fruits of purplish color, really decorative.
