Vigorous evergreen perennial shrub, with a typical bushy and compact habit. Native and spontaneous of the Mediterranean basin, it grows rather quickly until it reaches a maximum height of about 2 meters or a little more. Already branched from the base, it has woody branches and brown bark at the bottom, while at the top the juvenile apexes of the stems are herbaceous and greyish in color due to the presence of microscopic hairs. The small, leathery, narrow and linear leaves have a dark green upper page which folds, at the margins, on the lower one of silver-grey color; they can be used both fresh and dried to flavor many foods or even for many exotic preparations. The flowers, which appear numerous in the course of spring and then less abundant in a second autumn flowering, are violet-blue in color and gathered in small clusters at the axil of the leaves of the apical branches. Different varieties of rosemary are recognized; among these deserve to be mentioned: Rosmarinus Officinalis Majorka Pink with pink flowers and Rosmarinus Officinalis Majorka White with white flowers. These two varieties are distinguished from the type species not only by the color of the flowers but also by the posture which is more expanded, irregular and disordered.
