Pretty small semi-evergreen perennial plant, with a bushy and rounded habit. Native to Mexico, it can develop up to 1 m height and about 60 cm width. Most of the branches, which originate near the base of the plant, are lignified at the base and herbaceous in the terminal part of the plant; the small, ovate-lanceolate and opposite leaves are bright green and slightly aromatic. From spring to autumn, it produces small ruby red flowers, paired and gathered in terminal inflorescences about 15 cm long.
