An interesting evergreen shrub, rarely tree-like in habit. Native to the Mediterranean basin and found, like other species, in Mediterranean scrubland; it grows at a moderate rate and over time can reach a maximum height of 3-4 m and an almost equal spread. Globe-shaped, it has dense branching, with branches that tend to grow horizontally and appear ash-grey. The leaves are alternate and paripinnate, deep green and with an intense, characteristic fragrance. During spring, in the leaf axils of the previous year's shoots, tiny flowers appear; on female specimens, this being a dioecious species, they turn in autumn into showy, fleshy, reddish spherical fruits, each containing a single seed.
