Extremely elegant exotic, perennial and evergreen, with slow growth and arboreal or bushy habit, native to southern Africa: at the maximum of its development it can even exceed 4 m in height and can be equally wide in well-formed specimens. It has an herbaceous consistency, like the banana tree, and it is equipped with a robust and deep root system. It has leaves, sheathed together, with long petioles that always start from the base of the trunk: the leaf blade, wide and leathery, shiny, glabrous, furrowed by showy ribs, it is lanceolate in shape with smooth margins and bright light green obtuse apex. In spring, showy, original and large inflorescences sprout among the foliage. These are made of white flowers with tapered petals, inserted in a row in a large waxy spatula in the shape of a blackish purple boat. These complex "botanical structures" reminds of the head of a tropical bird, hence the common name "Giant Bird of Paradise".
