Pretty variety of Holcus mollis, a small grass with a herbaceous consistency, perennial and evergreen, with a rather fast growth and a thick and regular habit, native to Europe and western Asia. At the maximum of its development it can touch 40 cm of height, but it extends widely, sometimes resulting also a weed. It has numerous slender, thin stems, erect and supple which give the plant a globular and compact shape; the leaves, which sheath the stems, are narrow and ribbon-like with acute apex and smooth margins, bordered by an elegant white streak: soft to the touch, hence the common English name of “velvet grass”. During the summer, from the cushion of the foliage, abundant, tapered greenish-white spikes rise, doubling the typical height, enriching the decorative value of the plant in this season.

Richly branched from the base, it has rigid and erect stems, arranged radially to give a harmonious round shape. The stems are generously covered with fascinating thin opposite intense green leaves, smooth, glabrous, with a characteristic linear or lanceolate shape, with regular margins, and acute apex. From late spring to late autumn, abundant light pink flowers appear on the apical portions of the branches. They are trumpet shaped and smell like the petunia, hence the popular name “Mexican petunia” attributed to this plant.

Very popular tropical plant among the Mediterranean gardens, where it is cultivated for its extraordinary, showy and prolonged flowering. This genus of plants includes a multitude of hybrids with more or less bright colors, most of which have a sarmental-climbing habit, and are ideal for decorating railings and pergolas. The branches are vigorous and have strong thorns. The characteristic flowering is actually made up of paper-like bracts that surround the real flowers, insignificant for ornamental purposes. Some forms of Bougainvillea also grow as a bush. Its resistance to drought and diseases is excellent, while its real weak point is the cold: most of the hybrids, despite going into winter vegetative stasis, cannot bear frosts; there are few varieties that withstand moderate frosts in winter, such as Bougainvillea glabra “Sanderiana”, Bougainvillea glabra “Alexandra” and Bougainvillea x spectoglabra.

Fabulous herbaceous, perennial and evergreen, with rapid growth, with pulvinate habit, belonging to the Asteraceae family and traceable in its spontaneous state in the cracks of the vertical limestone walls of the eastern Adriatic cliffs: the term “Ragusina” refers to the old name of the city of Dubrovnik in Croatia. Small, it can grow up to 45 cm tall at full development and even 80 cm large. Semi-woody and strongly branched at the base, it produces numerous creeping stems on which are arranged, to form large rosettes, fleshy leaves, with a long pinnate-lobed petiole, with wavy margins and covered with a delicate fluff, which gives it a truly fascinating silvery-white color. From late spring to mid-summer, from the compact mass of the foliage, numerous flower heads of a shade of bright yellow rise on peduncles, single or briefly branched, such as to create a very refined contrast with the underlying leaves.

Rare sub-shrub, perennial and evergreen, with slow growth and pulvinate, thick and rounded habit, native to the western Mediterranean basin: at the maximum of its development, it can grow 30 cm tall, while it can grow much larger. It has numerous stems covered with a thin down that gives it a whitish color: with an erect or prostrate course and spreading in various directions, they give the plant the shape of a compact and regular cushion. The leaves are tiny, briefly petiolate and opposite, ovate-lanceolate-shaped, with smooth margins often folded on the lower lamina almost to the median spine, conspicuously tomentose and therefore silvery gray. In spring, small cupped flowers appear, solitary or gathered in inflorescences, with a corolla composed of 5 lemon-yellow petals with sometimes an orange spot at the base, and abundant golden stamens in the central part: from them, if fertilized, pubescent capsules containing the seeds develop. The term of the species “caput-felis”, or “cat head”, is due to the conformation of the buds that can recall the head of a cat.

A vigorous, mainly aquatic rhizomatous plant, herbaceous in texture, perennial and evergreen, with very rapid growth and a dense, clump-forming habit: at full size it can exceed 1 m in height, while spreading sideways almost indefinitely, to the point that in some cases it becomes invasive and poses a serious problem for neighbouring species in the same ecosystem. From the sturdy, widely branched underground organ rise numerous fans of narrow, long, ribbon-like leaves, with smooth margins and a pointed tip, leathery and hairless, of a bright green colour. In late spring, loose inflorescences rise above the foliage on fleshy, hollow stems, made up of golden-yellow flowers with the broad corolla typical of the genus Iris: three larger petals, set 120 degrees apart, bend downwards and are veined with purple, while three smaller ones, alternating with the first, rise upwards and then curve over like a hook. If fertilised, in autumn they form elongated capsules full of brownish seeds, which allow the plant to spread readily in the wild.

Branched and well lignified at the base, it has several erect stems, which, rising slowly branching repeatedly and orienting themselves in every direction, give the plant a compact and harmonious shape. Its rather broad leaves are one of its characterizing element among the numerous species of the genus Phlomis: opposite and thick, tomentose, with a widened lanceolate shape at the long petiole, with slightly crenated margins and obtuse apex, they are gray-green in color. In late spring, abundant circular inflorescences appear in the apical parts of the branches of the year, composed of small tubular flowers of light yellow color.

It can grow quickly reaching a maximum height of 1.20 m and a slightly smaller width. Well branched and semi-lignified at the base, it has erect stems with glabrous and thin dark green leaves, opposite and ovate with slightly serrated margins and acute apex. From the beginning of summer and until late autumn, it continuously produces at the apex of the branches showy and slender inflorescences, even more than 30 cm long and with a sinuous shape, formed by small indigo blue flowers, supported by dark purple calyxes, greedily visited by bees, butterflies and insects in general.

Festive large perennial shrub, deciduous and rapidly growing, with a thick and irregular habit, belonging to the BIGNONIACEAE family and native to subtropical regions south of Bolivia and north of Argentina: it can grow even more than 3m tall, when fully developed, and almost identical in width. Lignified and branched from the base, it produces woody stems with initial erect growth which, however, then arch at the top: the result is a consequently soft and expanded appearance of the plant. The leaves are opposite and neat, beautiful light green. From late spring and then, throughout summer, large inflorescences grow in the apical part of the branches. These are made up of orange-red flowers, with the classic trumpet shape, followed in autumn by rich hemispherical capsules.
