Rare sub-shrub, perennial and evergreen, with slow growth and pulvinate, thick and rounded habit, native to the western Mediterranean basin: at the maximum of its development, it can grow 30 cm tall, while it can grow much larger. It has numerous stems covered with a thin down that gives it a whitish color: with an erect or prostrate course and spreading in various directions, they give the plant the shape of a compact and regular cushion. The leaves are tiny, briefly petiolate and opposite, ovate-lanceolate-shaped, with smooth margins often folded on the lower lamina almost to the median spine, conspicuously tomentose and therefore silvery gray. In spring, small cupped flowers appear, solitary or gathered in inflorescences, with a corolla composed of 5 lemon-yellow petals with sometimes an orange spot at the base, and abundant golden stamens in the central part: from them, if fertilized, pubescent capsules containing the seeds develop. The term of the species "caput-felis", or "cat head", is due to the conformation of the buds that can recall the head of a cat.
