Splendid small subtropical shrub, perennial and semi-deciduous, with rapid development, with a compact and basically globular posture, native to South America: in cultivation it does not reach the dimensions with which it occurs in nature, touching a maximum of 50 cm both in height and width. Well branched and lignified at the base, it has initially erect stems which soon bend weakly and orient in every direction making it assume an almost roundish appearance. The leaves are small, oppositely arranged, lanceolate, with sharp apex and serrated edges, dark green in color. From the beginning of summer and until late autumn, groups of showy red flowers with a thin peduncle and five-lobed "pinwheel" corolla appear in the terminal parts of the branches, with an evident central organ, characteristic of the Malvaceae, formed by the fusion of stamens and pistil: they are followed, if pollination, by small spherical fruits containing few seeds.
