LAVANDULA x allardii

It prefers very bright and sunny positions and adapts to any type of soil, preferring poor and dry ones and above all well drained ones. It tolerates the salinity of sea winds in coastal locations and responds very well to prolonged periods of drought. It bears minimum winter temperatures of various degrees below zero; however, where the cold becomes intense and long-lasting and perhaps associated with a high level of environmental humidity, it is preferable to place the plant in a sheltered position, or mulch it with dry leaves and straw or guarantee it shelter in a cool and bright environment in winter. In autumn, it is possible to carry out a small intervention on the plant consisting in the removal of the withered flower stems and at the same time in the shortening of 1/3 of the various stems, in order to allow a more compact vegetative restart and to stimulate a subsequent more generous flowering. Although it is suitable to medium-sized pots and containers on terraces and balconies, which it manages to furnish with a touch of originality, it gives its best in the open ground in the garden. It can easily enrich some corners of our rock; alternatively, arranging several specimens in succession, imagine it creating easy low silver borders; or, planting it in a more irregular way, consolidating slopes and sloping areas in general; or, as a further suggestion, mixing it with grasses of various kinds, use it to create corners with a decisive wild flavor.
