Perennial cactus, with easy growth and irregular and sculptural bushy habit, native to Mexico: at its maximum development it can grow more than 50-cm tall, but the width of the bush can be even double. It consists of flattened and segmented stems, fleshy, rich in water and grey-green colored: each segment is oval-shaped and is called "cladodium" or "article" or "peel", by them the plant carries out the chlorophyll function, since the leaves are very small and ephemeral and fall immediately after the enlargement of the new peel. Each cladodium is densely studded with many "colored dots" called "areoles" in which there are tufts of very short, very minute golden yellow thorns called "glochids”. In summer, on the apical parts of the cladodes of mature plants, abundant cupped flowers appear consisting of light yellow petals: if fertilized, they are followed in autumn by ovoid fruits with a reddish skin and pulp rich in seeds.
