PHYLICA ericoides

PHYLICA ericoides

A distinctive evergreen shrub with a cushion-like habit, very compact and tidy. Native to South Africa, it grows at a moderate rate and can quickly reach a maximum height of 0.6-1.0 m and up to twice that in spread. Branching from the base, it has slender stems covered in short greyish hairs. The leaves are small, bright green, alternate and closely set, lance-shaped or linear, with margins rolled downwards so as to cover almost the whole of the underside. From the beginning of autumn the plant flowers profusely, with tiny white flowers forming small inflorescences at the tips of the older branches. These flower heads, which cover almost the entire surface of the plant and give off a strong honeyed scent, can be used in floral arrangements.

The secrets of a happy plant

Plant with a very thick and compact foliage, it's ideal to realize beautiful hedges. After rooting, it tolerates both light frosts and drought, even if it also benefits from regular summer irrigations. It can also be grown in pot where it will become object of amusing geometric pruning.
