Splendid shrub or small tree, perennial and evergreen, with medium speed of growth and thick and regular posture, native to South America: at the maximum of its development, it can exceed 4 m in height and extend slightly less in width. Branched and well lignified already from the base, it has stems with a reddish-brown juvenile bark (in the adult specimens, on the other hand, the external part of the branches flakes off into papery scales) and an erect course. The stems, however, rising and dividing repeatedly, orient in every direction and make the plant look like a large, compact and rounded bush. The leaves, leathery and opposite, glabrous, smooth and shiny, are obovate, with smooth margins and generally obtuse apex, and of a bright green color. In late spring, from the leaf axil of the terminal parts of the stems appear, usually solitary, small hermaphrodite flowers with 5 white petals and in the center a rich tuft of stamens. If fertilized, they produce, ripening at the end of summer, tasty spherical fruits with reddish skin and juicy pulp, rich in tiny light seeds and heterogeneous flavor: you can especially appreciate the strawberry, hence the popular name of "Strawberry Guava", popularly given to this plant.
