Contemplated among the protected botanical species and spontaneous along the coasts of the South-Eastern Mediterranean, including Sardinia and Southern Italy, this small bush, also called "pig spine", maximum 60 cm tall, intrigues above all for its original architecture: compact cushion, hemispherical, intricate and very branchy, it bears short woody branches repeatedly divided, often ending in gorgeous whitish thorns and small odd-pinnate shiny leaflets. The tiny purplish red flowers appear in late spring and are collected in short globose inflorescences; they are followed by copious spherical fruits.
