A beautiful and extremely hardy plant, perennial and deciduous, with fairly rapid growth. A shrub or small tree, it is native to the Mediterranean basin: at full size it can reach 4 m in height and spread slightly less. Woody and well branched from the base, it has numerous flexible stems, upright or slightly arching, which spread in every direction and divide repeatedly, giving the plant a broadly regular, tidy, dense and rounded shape. The leaves, carried on a prominent stalk, can resemble those of Cannabis; thin, smooth, hairless, deep green and strongly scented when brushed or crushed, they are palmate, and each of the five leaflets is lance-shaped with smooth margins and a pointed tip. Between late spring and summer, slender tapering inflorescences appear abundantly at the tips of the branches, made up of tiny blue flowers that are particularly attractive to bees, butterflies and insects in general; if fertilised, they form small, slightly fleshy spherical fruits containing dark seeds, commonly known as "monk's pepper", because monasteries once distilled from them a spirit with anaphrodisiac properties: from this the species name "agnus castus", meaning "chaste lamb", is said to derive.
