BULBINE frutescens

It prefers sunny locations, but it also appreciate partial shade, especially in regions with hot summer afternoons. It needs poor, dry and above all well-drained soils, as it fears, like any succulent, dangerous stagnation of water. It bears the saltiness of the sea winds in the coastal areas and does not fear even prolonged periods of drought. It tolerates minimum winter temperatures only a few degrees below zero, therefore in places with intense and prolonged cold it is necessary to place it in a sheltered position or protect it with a mulch of leaves, straw or bark, or guarantee it shelter in a cool and bright environment in winter. It does not need particular interventions; if it’s the case, at the vegetative restart in spring remove dry, broken, old, damaged or cluttered portions, and sometimes shorten some stems to stimulate tillering and growth in a more compact and dense way. Perfect to be cultivated on terraces and balconies in containers even of modest size and with perfect drainage: try with sure excellent results to make it fall from suspended pots or to mix it in bowls with other succulents with foliage of different shapes or contrasting colors. In the open ground in the garden it can elegantly enrich our rocks or come down softly from a dry stone wall or cover the foot of cylindrical cacti or lend itself, arranging several specimens in sequence, to the creation of unusual low borders with easy maintenance.
