Vigorous, rustic and common shrub, sometimes small tree, perennial and evergreen, with a medium rate of growth and a thick and regular, rounded shape, widespread in almost the entire Mediterranean basin. Together with many other essences, it forms the well-known "Mediterranean bush". At the maximum of its development, it can rise over 4 m in height and widen a little less. Lignified and branched from the base, it has numerous flexible and erect stems, which rising and branching repeatedly and moving in every direction, give the plant a compact and globular shape. The leaves, small and opposite, leathery, smooth and glabrous, elliptical in shape with slightly crenulated margins, acute apex and marked central ribs, are dark green on the upper page and slightly lighter on the lower one. Characteristically dioecious plant, it presents in the course of spring small clusters of minute flowers in the axillary region of the leaves. Flower are greenish-yellow if female and yellowish if male, pleasantly scented and able to attract the attention of bees, butterflies and insects in general. If fertilized, they produce decorative ovoid blackish brown fruits when fully ripe, which remain on the plant in the autumn and winter months.
