A small evergreen herbaceous plant, reaching no more than about 50 cm in height. It has long, narrow leaves with spiny margins, upright and arching, of a fine deep green, arranged to form the classic rosette. The bell-shaped flowers have green petals edged with blue and prominent golden stamens, and are gathered in inflorescences enclosed by showy pink bracts.
