Elegant and robust shrub, perennial and evergreen, with rapid growth and expansive habit, native to North America: at the maximum of its development it can reach 2 m in height and a little less in width. Branched and lignified already from the base, it presents stems with an initial erect trend which, however, stretching out, tend to spread apart, making it take on an open appearance: on these are applied in an opposite and dense way glossy, leathery and lanceolate leaves, with a ridged margin and acute apex, of a strong dark green on the top and a paler green on the bottom. Between late spring and early summer, large pendulous inflorescences appear on the terminal parts of the branches of the year, dense with minute white and fragrant flowers, coveted by various insects: these follow in autumn, and persist throughout the winter, abundant clusters of ovoid and blackish berries, highly sought after by birds.
