PLUMBAGO larpentae (=Ceratostigma plumbaginoides)

Description

Generous herbaceous perennial and ground cover plant with a fast growth and which comes from Eastern Asia. It is known over the years more commonly as "Ceratostigma Plumbaginoides"and during late spring it produces numerous erect and thick semi-hardwood stems which aren't able to exceed, in full development, 15 cm of height. So the plant assumes a ground cover aspect. Sometimes, in optimal growth conditions, it can be invasive and oppressive for other less vigorous ground cover plants. The obovate and lance-shaped leaves are organised in spirals, are of a reddish color when they grow till turning dark green. Later, during the first cold, they turn a very decorative shade of red- bronze. Flowers, which are very attractive for butterflies, are small, star-shaped and made by 5 blue petals: they are gathered in inflorescenses at the apex of branches and grow numerous from summer to late autumn.

Suggestions

It tolerates full sunny espositions, but prefers rhe semi-shaded ones and common soils, which are perfectly drained. It also tolerates saltiness and cold while drought must be combated throught regular waterings. It's a very versatile ground cover plant infact, after a short period of adjustment, it has a very intense rate of growth. So it can be used at the base of shrub, bush or trees of different nature, and also to realize ornamental and thick colored borders or to fall down by pots, containers and flower beds of differnt sizes.
