SAGINA subulata

Description

Graceful herbaceous plant, perennial, it grows rapidly ground covering. It is native to Europe. The thin creeping stems are covered with beautiful bright green needle-like leaves and, running on the ground, they branch out conspicuously conquering all the available space: rising a few centimeters from the ground, this plant visually looks like a moss. In late spring, this original ground covering plant displays a dense and soft foliage, an embroidery of tiny white 5-petalled flowers that give it the look of a truly elegant flowery turf.

Suggestions

Even if it tolerates the full sunny exposition, this herbaceous plant prefers the partial shade and soils which are wet and well drained. It doesn't tolerate very much the summer drought and must be supported by regular irrigations. On the contrary, it tolerates saltiness, cold and prolonged winds. It can be used in rock gardens, among floor flagstones or at the base of bushes and shrubs of different nature; it can also realize wonderful flowered grasspot which doesn't need mowing, provided that a sporadic and moderate trampling is guaranteed.
